TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

Rural: NWRPC provides professional services to units of government in conducting local and regional transportation planning studies. Assistance has included the development of roadway management plans, capital improvement plans, transit studies, highway corridor plans, transportation grant writing and technical assistance to local governments. The NWRPC-Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) meets quarterly to discuss current transportation issues and policy matters

Urban: NWRPC and the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission (ARDC) are each designated as the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the City of Superior, Wisconsin and the City of Duluth, Minnesota respectively. In 1974, NWRPC and ARDC created the Metropolitan Interstate Council (MIC), which is responsible for transportation-planning functions within the urbanized planning area of Superior and Duluth. Staff of the MIC conduct transportation planning studies, traffic forecasts, transit planning and annually adopts a Superior Urbanized Area and Duluth Urbanized Area Transportation Improvement Program. The MIC-Transportation Advisory Committee (technical) and Metropolitan Interstate Council (policy) meet monthly to review and discuss transportation studies and issues.
